Guelel Kumba is a guitarist, singer and songwriter of Fulani (African) heritage. He grew up in the Futa Toro region in the Senegal River Valley, which includes areas of northern Senegal and southern Mauritania. As a child, he participated in group singing and dancing but didn’t actively pursue music. After moving to Paris to pursue college studies, Kumba began studying and performing traditional Fulani music. Kumba first came to the U.S. in 2001 and settled in Oxford in early 2003. Once there, he discovered the close ties between North Mississippi blues traditions and Fulani music. Kumba performs solo, accompanying himself on guitar, as well as with his band Afrissippi. His performances include a mix of orginal and traditional Fulani songs and originals. The group’s second CD, Alliance, has received critical acclaim in Living Blues and other music magazines.
