Jason Mathena is the Instructor of Music and Assistant Band Director at
Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Wesson, MS. Prior to CLCC, he taught
at Southwest Mississippi Community College in Summit, MS. In addition to
his teaching duties, Mathena maintains a rigorous performance schedule
as a member of the Mississippi Symphony, Gulf Coast Symphony and
Meridian Symphony. He has many years of experience on vibraphone and
drum set and has performed in many different professional settings. He
has performed with rock bands, jazz bands and musicals, and currently
freelances in that capacity throughout central and south Mississippi. He
has presented numerous recitals, both academically and for the public,
and has also performed as soloist with various ensembles. Mathena holds
a DMA in Percussion Performance and Pedagogy with secondary emphases in
music theory and music history from the University of Southern
Mississippi; MM in Percussion Performance from the University of
Louisiana-Lafayette; and BME in Music Education from Au- burn
University. His primary instructors have included John Wooton, Jeff
Prosperie, She-e Wu, Troy Breaux, Greg Byrne, Harrell Bosarge, Bud
Berthold, Glenn Carter, and Kent Morrow. As a solo artist, Mathena
offers mainly mallet percussion solo recitals on vibraphone and marimba
and many educational programs focusing on beginning percussion, mallet
percussion and improvisation. His two groups, The Vibe Doctors and The
Plus1 Jazz Trio, offer a variety of jazz and popular music for any
