“Big” Joe Shelton performs traditional standards, contemporary and original blues compositions as a solo artist, as well as with various combinations of supporting musicians. He is a master of the “Mississippi Saxophone,” also known as the blues harmonica. He was born in Columbus and as a young man befriended blues legend “Big” JoeWilliams of Crawford, Mississippi, who greatly influenced his musical sensibilities. Shelton has performed his powerful vocal stylings and haunting harmonica harmonies for audiences throughout the Southeastern United States, as well as in Canada, England, France, Belgium, Bulgaria and the Netherlands. He presents an educational program, “Coming Together in the Blues,” for communities throughout Mississippi as a representative of the Jazz Foundation of America and the Howlin’ Wolf Blues Society ofWest Point, Mississippi. Shelton has recorded three albums.
