Music is one of Mississippi’s most important cultural expressions and exports. Native Mississippi musicians Jimmie Rodgers, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Elvis Presley, and countless others have played a crucial role in the development of American popular music. While music created by Mississippians is heard around the world, it continues to be a vital component of community life throughout the state, heard in nightclubs and juke joints, churches, county fairs, and other places where people come together.
