Mississippi Narrative Menu
One of the oldest artistic traditions found in Mississippi is the spoken word. From the tales and jokes told in a hunting camp to a detailed account of a family’s history shared by an elderly relative, creative verbal expression is used to entertain, educate, and maintain ties to family and community. The oral tradition has also had a significant influence on Mississippi writers. Many of them have used stories from their communities in their work, helping to create distinctive literature that is read and studied throughout the world and has been a major influence on countless other American writers.
