Quilting has played an important role in Elaine Carter's life. Born in Wilkinson County in 1910, Carter learned the art from watching her mother and other women from their community quilting together. As a young woman she quilted for her family out of necessity, creating covers to keep them warm during the winter. Carter quilted less frequently as an adult, but has returned to it since retiring. She continues to create quilts using the older patterns that were passed down to her, including "Drunkard's Path" and "Flower Garden." Carter also makes quilts that celebrate her family and record its history, including a quilt made from her father's ties and another that she uses to record the birthdates and marriages of the members of her family.
