FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JACKSON— The Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC) has granted $2 million in funds to 17 different organizations or local governments through its Building Fund for the Arts Initiative (BFA).  The program provides funding for the renovation or expansion of arts facilities owned by arts-based non-profits or local governments.

BFA is funded through bond funds allocated by the Mississippi Legislature. Since 2001, the program has provided funding for 125 different projects. The current round of grants was funded through funds leftover from past projects that had been cancelled or scaled back.

“BFA has been a very successful and tangible program,” stated Malcolm White, MAC’s Executive Director. “It has given the arts an address in local communities; helping build economic development, facilitating arts education and advancing creative workforce skills.”

MAC received nearly $8 million dollars in requested funds through the application process. The applicant’s proposals were reviewed by a group of panelists with artistic, architectural, and managerial expertise. The agency’s Board of Commissioners reviewed the panelists’ recommendations before making the final funding decisions.

For more information on the Commission’s other grants programs, visit the agency’s website, www.arts.state.ms.us.

The Mississippi Arts Commission is a state agency funded by the Mississippi Legislature, the National Endowment for the Arts, The Riley Foundation, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation, the Mississippi Endowment for the Arts at the Community Foundation of Greater Jackson and other private sources. MAC is the official grants-making and service agency for the arts in Mississippi.  The agency serves as an active supporter and promoter of arts in community life and in arts education.
