FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The All Write! Initiative of the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC) will take steps to reconcile the severe literacy needs in Mississippi by placing creative writing instructors in adult literacy classes.  Individuals from around the state who are interested in applying to become literacy facilitators for the All Write! Initiative should visit the Mississippi Arts Commission website at www.arts.state.ms.us to obtain an application.

Five writing consultants will be hired to teach creative writing in adult literacy programs in adult education centers, community centers and colleges. The instructors will facilitate a 10-week residency for adult GED learners and individuals with disabilities.  The participants will be encouraged to write by focusing on familiar topics, such as childhood memories and important events and people in their lives.  This program will start in January 2007 and will be completed by April 27, 2007.

Diane Williams, Arts Industry Director and Accessibility Coordinator for the Mississippi Arts Commission stated, “It is our goal to sponsor an additional program involving senior citizens.  We were delighted to have partnered with Hinds Community College - Creative Learning in Retirement, earlier this year and it is our hope to continue this aspect of the programming with senior citizen groups.”

Creative writing instructors can obtain an application for the All Write! program initiative from the Mississippi Arts Commission website at www.arts.state.ms.us or by contacting Diane Williams, Arts Industry Program Director with the Mississippi Arts Commission at dwilliams@arts.state.ms.us or by calling 601/359-6529.

The Mississippi Arts Commission is a state agency, funded by the Mississippi legislature, the National Endowment for the Arts, The Wallace Foundation and other private sources.  MAC is the official grants making and service agency for the arts in Mississippi. The agency serves as an active supporter and promoter of arts in community life and in arts education.
