FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Jackson, Miss – The Mississippi Art Education Association (MAEA) recently announced their annual award recipients, and the distinguished Prism Award was presented to Malcolm White, Executive Director of the Mississippi Arts Commission.  MAEA established the Prism Award in the 1980's to recognize an individual or group from outside of MAEA who promotes the visual arts across the state. The recipient is chosen because they support arts education programs in various creative ways to help further the importance and impact of visual arts on students in Mississippi.

“Being awarded the Prism Award by the members of the Mississippi Art Education Association underscores the value and commitment of the Mississippi Arts Commission to arts education and arts learning in our schools and communities across the state, stated Malcolm White.  “We are proud to be selected for outstanding support and leadership in the essential and creative curriculum area of the arts.  Our great shared goal is to return and increase arts instruction, art experiences and arts integrated strategies to all schools in Mississippi.  The Mississippi Arts Commission is honored to be recognized in this distinguished company and around this noble goal.”

The Mississippi Arts Commission believes that when the arts are integrated into the daily school curriculum, learning becomes engaging and active and promotes critical thinking skills and innovative problem solving.  The agency encourages schools to realize that the arts are the link to meeting the individual learning needs of each child.

The Mississippi Art Education Association is an organization of art educators who are passionate in their commitment to the necessity of art in developing creative processes that benefit all students.  The organization promotes the arts, holds innovative conferences, and demonstrates to policy makers the benefits of arts education.

The Mississippi Arts Commission is a state agency, funded by the Mississippi Legislature, the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation, the Riley Foundation, the Mississippi Endowment for the Arts at the Community Foundation of Greater Jackson and other private sources.  MAC is the official grants-making and service agency for the arts in Mississippi. The agency serves as an active supporter and promoter of arts in community life and in arts education.
